(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Houston, August 18, 2003) Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council will host a Super Survival Camp Weekend at Camp Agnes Arnold, 8832 N. Frazier in Conroe, September 5 through 7th for local Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12. Over 300 Girl Scouts will learn how to dress professionally on a budget, develop tactics for job interviewing, and learn college tips and financial planning. Photo opportunities are available Saturday, September 6 from 10 until 12 noon and from 1 until 4 p.m. Girl Scout troops, or individual Girl Scouts, called Juliettes, will attend three sets of workshops: Learn To Lead, offering Girl Scout leadership sessions, Avoid the Greed, offering tips on career exploration and financial health and well-being, and Feel The Need, offering sessions on aromatherapy, self-defense, and dating issues.

“We have called this a Super Survival Weekend because teens today need to have a varied set of skills and experiences to survive and thrive in today’s global society and economy,” says Cindy Walter, director of programs for the San Jacinto Council. “Many of these sessions started off as ideas we got from the Girl Planning Board for this event,” Walters adds. “That is part of what is unique about Girl Scouting, every event we do is by girls, and for girls.”

From ‘Learning to Dress Like a Million Bucks (for under a $100)’ to making your own make-up in ‘Kitchen Cosmetics’, each Girl Scout will be able to customize her ‘Weekend Teen Survival Kit’ by choosing sessions that reflect her own interests, goals and values.

“We are so excited about this event, because the girls really told us want they wanted. For instance, they said ‘we love career exploration, but tell us how we can get a job now’—well, we listened, and we have Starbucks Coffee on site at camp to provide interviews. Through unique activities like those of Super Survival Weekend, you can see the impact of girls and adults working together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and admiration,” says Hattie Saulsberry, longtime Girl Scout volunteer and Super Survival Weekend Event Chair.
